Dog Sign Language Training Commands
Good Dog – Thumbs up with happy, smiling face and wiggly body.
No – Index finger extended, all other fingers tucked under thumb,
wave back and forth at dog with stern face.
Release - “OK” hand gesture with right hand with happy, smiling face.
Potty – ASL “P” gesture with right hand
(First 2 fingers extending down, second two fingers curled in,
thumb between index and middle finger).
Off - Index finger extended, all other fingers tucked
under thumb, sweep finger in downward motion ending
by pointing at the floor with stern face.
Watch – Finger to nose, dog’s eyes should meet your eyes.
(Start with treat to nose and eventually discontinue the treat).
Leave it – ASL “L” gesture with right hand
(Thumb and index finger in the shape of an L).
Sit – Four fingers to thumb in a pinch movement with
left hand. Elbow bent, hand close in front of body (over heart).
Down – Palm flat down, fingers extended, push
motion straight down with right hand.
Go To Your Room – ASL “R” gesture with right hand,
flick towards crate door. (Middle finger crossed over
Index finger, other fingers bent and held by thumb).
Stop – Palm out in “Halt” motion, done with either hand.
Back Up – Palm out in “Stop” command, push toward
dog multiple times as they move backward.
Come – Right hand to chest, palm down, elbow straight out
to the side. Hold until dog is sitting in front of you at your feet.
Heel – Pat left hip (or upper thigh) with left hand.
Once sitting at your side, lead off with left foot,
pat leg. Dog should follow at your side and look
up to your face as you’re walking.
