On May 8, 2010 Cher set out to pull a dog for the organization she often volunteered with. When she arrived and did her evaluation of this young, terrified Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier named Reilly, who was cowering in a corner, she realized that the group she was working with would not be able take him in. Knowing that this boy deserved a second chance at a great life and that there was only one way he was going to get it, she decided that this would be the day she would finally branch out and start a rescue for animals that deserved the second chance that other groups were not always able to offer. The owners signed the dog over to her, and gave her a donation for his medical care. She got in her car with Reilly and made her first phone call to her friend Erica. They had a conversation about Reilly and starting a rescue together and came up with an immediate plan.
That was Saturday, by Monday Erica had incorporated Secondhand Snoots Rescue with the State of Illinois and written Bylaws, Cher had put together the rest of the Board of Directors, and Reilly was vetted and in his foster home, which became his adoptive home in less than two weeks.
Secondhand Snoots is a non-profit, volunteer driven, no-kill animal rescue. We only take in as many animals as we have foster homes for. As a small group we are 100% dependent on donations; we do not receive any government funding or endowments.
All animals that come into the care of Secondhand Snoots Rescue are fully vetted before they are adopted out. This means they are micro-chipped, and brought up to date on all of their age appropriate shots, spayed or neutered, Heartworm tested and treated if necessary, as well as treated for any other medical issues that can be treated. We absorb the cost of these medical expenses so that the adoptive homes do not have to.
Our future growth will be planned out slowly and deliberately. It is our goal to have a physical location in the future when the time is right and finances allow it.
We are licensed annually with the Illinois Department of Agriculture, and as of January 14, 2012 we are a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization.
Please read about becoming a volunteer and making donations to help the animals that Secondhand Snoots Rescue has saved and to help us save more animals from high kill animal control facilities.
We are always looking for foster homes so that we are can save more animals and we are always seeking donations and actively fundraising to help take care of the animals that we already have in boarding & foster care.
