By definition foster means to promote the growth of; help develop, help grow.

Your foster can be anywhere from a week to a year. You will need to commit to fostering that dog until they are adopted as we do not have a kennel facility or open foster homes to place them in and moving a newly rescued dog around can cause them to have trust issues.

The responsibilities of being a foster family vary with the needs of the individual animal. Aside from day-to-day care, such as feeding, grooming, training and exercise, most of them simply need the extra love and attention to aid in their emotional and physical well-being. We sometimes have dogs that require short or long-term medical care, that need to be given medication, or they will need to be taken to vet appointments.

The search for a forever family for your foster pet begins once he/she has been rescued by Secondhand Snoots. We list our adoptable pets on our website, on Petfinder.com, AdoptaPet.com and on our Facebook page; and word of mouth! All adoptions are handled by Secondhand Snoots staff, as a foster you are not expected, but you are invited, to participate in the adoption process.

Secondhand Snoots Rescue funds all veterinary care for our foster dogs; we do ask that as a foster you are able to transport your pet to a Secondhand Snoots Rescue approved Veterinarian. We are available to support you and offer you advice for any training needs your pet may have. We ask that you provide love, food, and basic needs. We are able to provide food and other supplies on occasion - don't hesitate to ask!

If you have questions about becoming a foster for Secondhand Snoots please send an email to info@secondhandsnoots.org.

We hold our foster home applicants to the same standards and follow the same process as we do for our adoptive homes.

  • Foster parents must be at least 21 years of age and must show a driver’s license or other government-issued identification.
  • All members of the family must be in agreement about when to foster a pet.
  • Renters will need to provide a copy of their lease, landlord contact information or written proof of permission to have pets.
  • Fosters who live in condos or townhouses are required to show a copy of their condo/townhouse rules, regulations, or bylaws showing that pets are allowed.
  • Requirements, such as need for a fence, maximum hours the animal may be left alone, level of experience required, etc. will be determined according to the specific needs of each animal.
  • Other animals residing in the home must be spayed/neutered, unless medically unable to withstand the surgery, and must be current on their vaccinations (Rabies, Distemper, Parvo, Bordetella)
  • We do not allow out "outdoor pets." Pets that are left outside to do not bond as readily with their people and are prone to nuisance behaviors like barking, escaping, roaming, digging, predatory behavior and other destruction. If applicants currently have an "outdoor pet" their application may be denied.
  • Foster homes must be within a reasonable distance from either the rescue coordinators or rescue office and able to attend adoption events.
  • Approval is at the sole discretion of Secondhand Snoots Rescue Board of Directors and applications may be denied for any reason.
